Quilt Festival: Mixed Technique Quilts

Are you ready for some spectacular quilts from Quilt Festival? Mixed technique quilts are on today's menu.
Keiko Ike's Mariner's Compass quilt uses color and design to create an intended mysterious effect. Keiko combined machine appliqué, machine piecing, and free-motion in Magical Zone, which took the top prize for Mixed Technique.

Emi Chabata was awarded second place for Flowers in Bloom in the Rainy Season, which contained appliquéd hydrangeas, Grandmother's Fan umbrellas, and beaded raindrops. All work was done by hand.

Linda Fleschner used modified English paper piecing,  fused appliqué, and long-arm quilting to create her third place recipient. The Radiant Star pattern, a monochromatic color scheme, and a Ravendale paisley print came together to create this beauty. If you look closely, you can see how the elaborate border mimics the fabric prints used in the central star.

Mailyn Badger won Honorable Mention for Exuberance, named by her late husband who watched her hand embroider and appliqué it during his illness. Though she struggled for six months to bring herself to quilt it following his death, she eventually persevered by thinking about what he would have wanted. It is a testament to the tie between quilting and the affection for loved ones.

The original design was inspired by Judy Niemeyer's Coxcomb Contest.

The Mixed Technique category has a striking array of variation among styles, but all seamlessly melded traditional techniques in unexpected ways. They are excellent examples of taking a pattern in an entirely new direction, and making it one's own.
